## Catalog Structure

## Recordings vs Compositions

Understanding the difference is key to effective catalog management:

| Aspect | Recordings | Compositions |
| -------------- | ----------------------------- | ------------------------ |
| **Definition** | Master recordings (the sound) | Musical works (the song) |
| **Identifier** | ISRC | ISWC |
| **Rights** | Master rights | Publishing rights |
| **Owners** | Labels, artists | Writers, publishers |
| **Revenue** | Streaming, sales | Performance, mechanical |

## How Catalog Gets Populated

### Contract Extraction (Primary)

When you upload contracts, recordings and compositions mentioned are automatically extracted and added to your catalog. The AI:

1. Extracts asset references from contract text
2. Enriches with Spotify metadata (artwork, duration, identifiers)
3. Links assets to the contract

For details on how extraction works (recordings, compositions, commitments, and enrichment), see the [Catalog](/projects/contracts/contract-details/structured-data/catalog) section in Contract Details. To manually add recordings or compositions to a contract, see [Edit Catalog](/projects/contracts/contract-details/structured-data/edit-catalog).

### Statement Suggestions (Secondary)

When royalty statements contain assets not yet in your catalog, the system creates [suggestions](/projects/statements/assets/suggestions) based on Spotify data. You can accept these suggestions to add new items to your catalog.
